Trinity University (TU), Lagos, has admitted 715 new students for the 2025/2026 academic session.
During the eighth matriculation ceremony of the university on Wednesday, Pastor Samuel Olatunji, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the university, charged the newly admitted students with skills, values and competencies.
Olatunji said the institute will equip newly admitted students with the right knowledge, skills, values and competencies needed for social impact.
Olatunji stressed the need for value-oriented education to produce graduates useful for national development.
“These values are not just on paper, they are the beating heart of Trinity University.
“Let these values guide you, pursue excellence, serve others with humility, and lead with integrity to make a significant social impact,” he said.
The matriculation lecturer and vice-chancellor of Ekiti State University, Prof. Joseph Ayodele, said challenges in Nigerian universities require approaches that go beyond academic reforms and intellectual capacity alone.
Ayodele said emotional, social and psychological support systems are essential to improving student achievement and overall well-being in higher institutions.
He spoke on the topic: Addressing the Challenges of University Education in Nigeria: The Role of Psycho-Social Adaptation”.
He added that with resilience and the right coping strategies, students could overcome systemic challenges and position themselves as contributors to national development and global competitiveness.
“Your challenges are real, but so is your ability to overcome them. With the right emotional, social and psychological support, healthy coping strategies and a resilient mindset, Nigerian university students can not only survive the system, but overcome it.
Furthermore, the vice-rector of the TU, prof. Clement Kolawole, said institutions must provide a conducive learning environment, effective policies and qualified staff to improve teaching, learning and research outcomes.
Kolawole warned against drug abuse and examination malpractice, stressing that discipline and adherence to institutional norms are necessary to maintain standards and credibility in the education sector.
“We work in harmony to ensure that there is no hiding place for students with negative tendencies; drug/alcohol abuse, laziness, idleness, bullying, exam malpractice and unjustified absences.
“Appropriate policy guidelines are in place to ensure that students who know their onions are willing to take full advantage of our menu are supported by a supportive atmosphere, state-of-the-art facilities and a highly motivated workforce,” he added.
He said a values-based education, anchored in integrity, leadership and responsibility, remains vital to producing graduates capable of driving innovation, governance and sustainable national development.
He announced that the 715 newly admitted students represent a 26.5 percent increase compared to students enrolled in the school year. 2024/2025.
