Tuggar resigned as foreign minister to pursue Bauchi gubernatorial candidacy

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from his post as he prepares to contest the Bauchi State gubernatorial election.

The development was confirmed on Monday in a brief statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

He said, “The resignation of the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs has been confirmed.”

Tuggar is reportedly among a group of ministers in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet who are expected to step down to pursue political ambitions ahead of the upcoming elections.

Previously, the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had publicly expressed Tuggar’s intention to contest the Bauchi gubernatorial election.

Abdulkadir said, “The minister is interested and aspires to run for governor of Bauchi State.”

Responding to a question regarding the timing of his resignation, he added, “There is a timetable issued by INEC that lays out all the rules and regulations for running for office; he (Tuggar) will comply with it.”

Tuggar, a native of Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area of ​​Bauchi State, has previously run for the position of governor and is now set to file another candidacy after quitting the federal cabinet.
