World News Briefs: Ukraine drone strikes, Afghan rights, Zero Waste Day

In a night of more terror for civilians, on March 28, a drone attack hit the Odesa No. 5 Maternity Hospital which had dozens of pregnant women and newborns inside.

The patients survived because they were in underground shelters, and no one was injured in the attack, according to the UN World Health Organization (WHO).

32 new mothers and 22 newborn babies were evacuated to other facilities because the hospital was badly damaged. Attacks on hospitals violate international humanitarian law. This is the fifth UN-backed maternity hospital to be affected in Ukraine this year alone.

Attacks in other areas

Elsewhere in Ukraine, the Mykolaiv region was also attacked, resulting in the death of a child and the wounding of several other residents, including children.

A school and other infrastructure were also damaged. UN aid coordination office, Ocha, said humanitarian agencies had provided emergency assistance to those in need.

In the latest drone strikes carried out by Russia, a 13-year-old boy was killed in Kramatorsk while a 13-year-old girl was killed in Voskresenske, according to a report from the UN Children’s Fund. UNICEFwhich called for “an end to the senseless attacks and destruction of young lives”.

The human rights crisis in Afghanistan continues

Women and girls continue to be erased from public life through Taliban decisions, aaccording to a new report by the UN human rights office.

In the period between August 2025 and January this year, the report found that girls continued to be barred from education beyond grade six, and medical leaving exams were held without women for the second year in a row in November.

Women who do not comply with the veil requirement are removed from public transportation and denied access to markets and public services.

Elsewhere, Taliban security forces continue to prevent Afghan women, including UN staff, contractors and visitors, from entering UN buildings across the country.

Women and girls are criminalized

Books written by women were removed from the shelves of bookstores and libraries, including university libraries in several provinces, regardless of subject, content, or author’s nationality.

“De facto authorities, in essence, criminalize the presence of women and girls in public life,” said UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk, presenting the report: “Women and girls are the present and the future, and countries cannot develop without them.”

Since 2021, de facto authorities carried out 12 public executions, two of which occurred during the reporting period, in sports stadiums, in violation of the right to life. Corporal punishment was administered publicly every week.

Meanwhile, journalists and media workers continue to face arbitrary arrest and detention due to “disproportionate restrictions on the content they produce.”

The UN urges action to change inefficient food systems

Every year, the world throws away around one billion tons of food that is completely safe to eat. About 60 percent Food waste occurs at the household level while the rest mostly comes from food service and retail.

This issue was in the spotlight last Monday International Zero Waste Day.

The large amount of edible food we throw away is the result of an inefficient food system – from production, distribution, to consumption.

With this year’s focus “Zero Waste Starts on Your Plate”, the UN is calling for the transformation of food systems to become more efficient, resilient and sustainable.

Transformation method

For example, governments can advance climate and biodiversity plans and national policies that support these goals.

Businesses can set measurable food waste reduction targets and integrate them into existing sustainability commitments.

Meanwhile, consumers can improve how they buy, store and prepare food to reduce waste and conserve resources.
