Jigawa cleric cancels daughter’s wedding due to groom’s pro-Tinubu social media posts

A Jigawa-based Islamic cleric, Malam Sani, has sparked widespread reactions after he abruptly canceled his daughter’s wedding just a day before the ceremony, citing the groom’s open support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The wedding, scheduled for April 3 in Yalwawa area of Dutse, was canceled at the last moment despite full preparations, leaving both families and guests in shock.

According to reports, the cleric noticed that the prospective groom had consistently posted pictures and messages on social media in support of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ambition.

The posts reportedly included optimistic predictions about the president’s chances at the polls.

Rather than neglect the matter, Malam Sani reportedly withdrew his consent to the marriage, insisting that the groom’s political position raised concerns beyond mere opinion.

When community elders stepped in to intervene and mediate the dispute, the cleric stood his ground, arguing that the young man’s political expression reflected what he described as a “lack of compassion and lack of faith” – a justification that he said was sufficient to end the union.

He reportedly made it clear that the decision was not motivated by any personal resentment towards the groom, but by what he considered a fundamental moral concern.

The sudden cancellation has since generated heated debate on social media platforms, particularly after the story was shared by the “Uncle Musa” account, with Nigerians divided between amusement and criticism over the cleric’s decision.

While some users derided this development as an extreme reaction to political expression, others defended the religious person’s right to make decisions based on personal beliefs.

The incident further highlighted the growing intersection of politics, religion and personal relationships in Nigeria, where political affiliations increasingly influence social dynamics, sometimes with far-reaching consequences.
