Troops, DSS, volunteers repel bandit attack, kill dozens of people in Niger

Troops of the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS) operatives and local volunteer forces on Tuesday foiled an attempted attack by over 300 bandits in Niger State, killing many.

On Wednesday, it was learned that the attackers had targeted Bagna and Erena communities in Shiroro Local Government Area, in what could have escalated into a large-scale attack if they had not been intercepted.

A credible security source said the operation was carried out following advance intelligence about the planned attack.

According to the source, based on information gathered, security agents and local volunteers laid an ambush as the bandits approached the communities.

“Over 300 bandits, armed and on motorbikes, were advancing towards the communities.

“Security agents and vigilantes, acting on credible intelligence, ambushed them. Dozens of people were killed, while many others fled towards the Makuba and Allawa axis,” the source said.

The source also noted that growing collaboration between security agencies and local volunteer groups has strengthened frontline defense and helped fill security gaps in vulnerable communities.

Residents of the affected areas praised the joint forces for their rapid response, describing the intervention as decisive in averting a major disaster.

“We are very happy. We thank the joint security forces for protecting us,” one resident said.
