Barca bagged a derby win vs Espanyol to extend their La Liga lead

Barcelona have extended their lead in Spain’s La Liga after beating Espanyol 4-1 at Camp Nou on Saturday night.

With this win, the league leaders are nine points clear of rivals Real Madrid, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Girona on Friday.

Ferran Torres rose highest to head in Lamine Yamal’s corner at the back post in the ninth minute to open the scoring.

The former Manchester City star scored his second goal in the 25th minute when he received a pass from Yamal with the outside of his boot.

Pol Lozano pulled one back for the visitors early in the second half, but Yamal and Marcus Rashford both scored to put the game out of Espanyol’s reach.

At 18 years and 272 days, Lamine Yamal became the club’s youngest player to reach 100 appearances and again demonstrated his importance with two assists.

Espanyol have now failed to win in 14 consecutive La Liga matches (five draws and nine defeats) but remain in 10th place in the standings.

Barca will play next Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid, where they will have to come back from two goals down if they are to progress.
