The National Congress Committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has successfully conducted its local government congresses in Borno State, with the chairman of the committee, Alhaji Musa Halilu Ahmed, hinting that the party has adopted a consensus model to safeguard its internal unity.
Speaking in Maiduguri, the state capital attracted by the R&B suite, Ahmed, a senior party leader, explained that the decision follows a strategic directive from the national leadership to engage members at all levels through peaceful reconciliation.
According to him, the exercise, which saw the candidates emerging with unanimous consensus, is a testimony to the growing maturity of the party in the State.
“I am pleased to inform the public that through the mechanisms provided by the ADC leadership, we have achieved tremendous success in getting most, if not all, local governments to agree on a consensus basis,” Ahmed said.
Citing the example of Biu local government, he noted that “critical stakeholders” in the area worked together to ensure a factionless process.
“As you can see today, there is no faction in Biu. They unanimously agreed to work together to bring this issue to victory,” he added.
While praising the consensus option, the commission chair made clear that the party remains faithful to democratic principles, stressing that other internal mechanisms, including full elections, will remain on the table should dialogue fail.
He said: “We have other internal mechanisms, including grounds for elections, to amicably resolve situations should there be a failure in the consensus option. What you see here are those who have already been selected and attested.”
