A major Kano State forum among APC stakeholders has endorsed former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo, as favorite to fill the vacant Deputy Governor post, signaling a strong push for consensus within the party.
During a late-night strategy meeting on Saturday, party heavyweights overwhelmingly supported Garo, revealing that he “secured around 90% approval from participants, especially from the influential old bloc.”
Leading the charge, former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to choose Garo, describing him as a loyal, tested and grassroots-driven politician.
Speaking about the meeting, the lawmaker said, “Garo is the most suitable candidate. He has remained consistent, patient and loyal. This is the kind of support the governor needs at a critical time,” Doguwa said.
The approval comes amid efforts to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former deputy governor Abdussalam Aminu Gwarzo, with the governor consulting major APC blocs to ensure unity.
Although interested parties put forward three names, including Garo, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.
Stakeholders present at the meeting, however, said the deliberations quickly tilted in Garo’s favor, garnering near-unanimous support.
Despite the inclusive nomination process, the meeting’s deliberations produced a near-consensus in favor of Garo, who was said to have garnered around 90% support from participants.
Prominent stakeholders said to have supported his candidature include former Kano State Governor and former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Former Deputy Governor and former Assistant Minister for Housing, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo; Hon Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila; Hon Mariya Bunkure, Minister of State FCT; Senator Garba Lado; AA Zaura, faithful supporter of APC; former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and current member for Dambatta Federal Constituency Makoda Hamisu Chidari; member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Hon. Abdulhamin Jibrin Kofa, Hon. Abdullahi Sani Rogo, among many others.
Party insiders also attribute Garo’s advantage to his deep political resume: from PDP organizing secretary in 2007 to special advisor under Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, ALGON president, and two-term commissioner. He was also the APC deputy governorship candidate in 2023.
With no current position holding him back, stakeholders see Garo as someone perfectly capable of intervening without disrupting governance.
It was also said that his appearance could strengthen the unity of the APC in Kano and stabilize the political landscape of the state at a crucial time.
