The Supreme Court scheduled a crucial appeal hearing for April 22

Nigeria’s Supreme Court has set April 22 to hear a series of appeals related to the ongoing leadership dispute within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The appeal was initiated by the party faction led by former Special Affairs Minister, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, who challenged the ruling previously delivered by the High Court on March 9.

A five-member panel of the top court, headed by Justice Mohammed Garba, set a hearing date for Tuesday after approving a request to expedite the process.

Additionally, the court shortened the time period for filing legal briefs, directing respondents to submit their responses within five days, while appellants were given two days to file responses.

The legal battle stems from an appeals court decision, which upheld an earlier decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja. These decisions prevent the PDP from proceeding with its planned national convention until it complies with the provisions of relevant laws, including the Election Law and the party’s internal regulations.

The Federal High Court judgment was delivered by Justices James Omotosho and Peter Lifu, following a lawsuit filed by aggrieved party members, among them former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido.

Several prominent political figures were present at Tuesday’s hearing, including Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, along with Turaki and other stakeholders in the party.
