Actress Victoria Inyama links circumcision to sexual control, sparking controversy

Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has courted controversy after describing her experience with female circumcision as the “best thing” that happened to her during a live Instagram chat with media personality Daddy Freeze. Her comments have reignited debate around the practice, widely considered by global health bodies to be female genital mutilation (FGM), and its cultural, medical and human rights implications.

Speaking during the session, Inyama confirmed that he had undergone the procedure as a child. Responding to a question from Daddy Freeze, he said, ”Yes, because I grew up in the village with my grandmother. It was the best thing they did for me. I swear to God because if I say I won’t have s3x, I won’t and that’s the power I have as a woman.”

He explained that this experience shaped his personal discipline, especially regarding sexual behavior, and added that it prevented him from engaging in promiscuity. The actress also shared the circumstances of her procedure, noting that she was about five or six years old at the time and lost consciousness due to the pain.

Despite its stance, health experts and international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), classify female circumcision as a dangerous practice that has no medical benefits. It is associated with severe complications such as chronic pain, infections, risk of childbirth, and long-term psychological trauma. This practice is illegal in some countries, including Nigeria, although enforcement varies.

Inyama’s remarks have sparked renewed attention to the persistence of FGM in some communities, where it is often linked to cultural beliefs around sexuality, purity and social norms. Advocacy groups continue to call for increased awareness, stronger law enforcement, and community-level interventions to end this practice.

When asked if he would allow his daughter to be circumcised, Inyama said he would not take full responsibility for the decision, and stated that it would be up to the child’s father.
