The Gombe and Bauchi state governments have commended the office of the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, through the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for organizing training for Science, Technology, Mathematics and Agriculture (STEMA) teachers in senior secondary schools in the North East sub-region to acquire digital and technical skills in teaching methodology for students.

The programme, through the Academic Support and Skills Enhancement Program (ASSEP) project, is expected to cover many states of the federation.

The event took place simultaneously in Gombe and Bauchi states, although Borno and Yobe also benefited from the operation, while Adamawa and Taraba states will soon benefit.

In her opening speech, the Head of ASSEP in Gombe, Mrs. Lami Garkuwa, highlighted the importance and objectives of ASSEP training.

He explained that the training was designed to strengthen teachers’ capacity in using student-centered methodologies, improve classroom management skills, enhance STEMA teaching in schools, promote the use of innovative and technology-driven teaching approaches, and improve learning outcomes among students.

He encouraged participants to pay close attention and engage actively during the sessions.

In his goodwill message, the Director of School Services in the Ministry of Education, Yusuf Abubakar Muhammadu, expressed great pleasure and optimism at the meeting, stressing that the event was not simply the opening of a training programme, but the opening of opportunities for thousands of children across Gombe State.

He described the Academic School Support and Skills Enhancement Program (ASSEP) as “more than a laboratory, but rather a platform that provides teachers with practical tools to positively transform lives.”

He emphasized that the program was designed to equip teachers with the 21st century skills needed to transform classrooms into centers of excellence.

Also in his speech, ASSEP Bauchi State Focal Person, Haj. Ladi Muhammad Hamma, appreciated the facilitators for their commitment to teacher development and noted that their efforts are in line with the vision of providing quality, inclusive and equitable education for all.

“ASSEP is an initiative focused on improving the quality of education in senior secondary schools. The program aims to improve teacher effectiveness, increase student learning outcomes and promote modern teaching practices in line with 21st century standards in the six (6) States of the North East geopolitical zone.

“ASSEP, in collaboration with the North East Development Commission, organized a two (2) day training aimed at equipping 100 selected STEMA teachers in twenty (20) selected post-basic schools in Bauchi State with practical skills and modern teaching strategies.” Hamma explained.

In her brief remarks, Dr. Mariam Masha, SSA to the President for NEDC and Regional Development, Office of the Vice President, explained that the initiative is a joint partnership between the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Office of the Vice President, serving as a localized cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Masha noted that by prioritizing human capital development, the program aims to close the education gap in the Northeast and equip the next generation with the technical skills needed for a 21st century economy.

Furthermore, Comrade Mahmud Muhammad, Personal Assistant for Home and North Eastern Affairs to the Vice President and member of the ASSEP Project Implementation Team (PIT), expressed satisfaction with the Gombe and Bauchi state governments “for placing the program aimed at improving the ability of teachers to integrate technology into their teaching methods, as part of a broader effort to promote education in the region.”

With this move, he added, “teachers in beneficiary states are expected to leverage digital tools to make learning more interactive and engaging for students.”
