Offa bank robbery: APC rejects claims of mistreatment of Saraki by Kwara government

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has rejected claims of maltreatment against former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over a 2018 robbery incident in Offa area of the state.

The APC Secretary in Kwara, Abdulwaheed Balogun, said at a press conference in Ilorin on Saturday that the alleged abuse of the former governor of Kwara State by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was “melodramatic” and without merit.

Balogun said his party felt the need to respond to trending misinformation to clarify the situation and dispel people’s minds.

The state government on Thursday announced plans to charge former Senate President and former Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed for the murder of several people in a robbery incident eight years ago.

“APC’s attention has been drawn to statements by the PDP and Saraki accusing Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of planning to file charges against Saraki and three others over the 2018 Offa armed robbery incident that claimed the lives of over 30 people.

“Neither Saraki nor the PDP need worry if they are innocent,” Balogun said, stressing that the court relied on evidence and facts rather than public statements,” an APC spokesperson said.

He said rather than making personal attacks, it would be more appropriate if the accused in the case were put on trial and let the court determine his guilt or innocence.

The APC Secretary said that people familiar with the events of the period would attest to the facts and urged all parties to let the legal process run its course.

He also criticized statements that questioned the popularity of the current government, and stated that the state’s residents were in a position to judge the government.

Balogun praised the state government for upholding justice in the matter.
