Abeokuta North APC aspirant, Bayewunmi rejects ‘wasted generation’ label, says youths are ready for leadership

An All Progressives Congress (APC) leader and House of Assembly aspirant for Abeokuta Northern State Constituency, Babatunde Bayewunmi, has criticized the characterization of Nigerian youths as a “wasted generation”, describing such characterization as unfair, disheartening and contrary to leadership ideals.

Bayewunmi made the observation on Friday while declaring her intention to represent Abeokuta North State constituency in the Ogun State House of Assembly under the APC platform in the forthcoming elections.

He said leadership must be rooted in inspiration, inclusion and empowerment, warning that blanket criticism of young people undermines their contribution to national development.

“It is deeply troubling to hear any remarks describing an entire generation as ‘wasted.’ As an aspiring young person, I believe this language does not reflect the spirit of leadership we should be upholding,” he said.

“Leadership should inspire, guide and create opportunity, not discourage those it is meant to cultivate.”

Bayewunmi stressed that young Nigerians remain a driving force in innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity, despite the economic and structural challenges facing the country.

According to him, youth from all communities are already contributing significantly to national growth through various endeavors, including technology, agriculture and creative industries.

“The truth is simple: No generation is wasted. Our young people are full of talent, innovation, resilience and courage. In our communities, they are building, creating and struggling often despite significant challenges,” he said.

He noted that rather than resorting to sweeping generalizations, leaders should focus on addressing systemic gaps and expanding opportunities for young people to thrive.

“Where there are gaps, there needs to be reflection and renewed commitment from leadership to strengthen systems, expand opportunities and provide the right supports for young people to thrive,” he added.

The APC aspirant also urged members of the party to support inclusivity in governance, saying the progressive identity of the APC must be reflected in how it treats the youth population.

“As members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we must remember that progress means inclusion. A truly progressive party empowers its youth; it does not label them,” he said.

Reaffirming his faith in the capabilities of Nigerian youths, Bayewunmi said the younger generation is ready to take on leadership responsibilities if given the right environment and support.

“I stand firmly with this generation. We are not wasted; we are ready. Ready to lead, ready to serve and ready to contribute meaningfully to a better future,” he said.

“What we seek is not condemnation, but commitment; not doubt, but faith; and not limitation, but opportunity.”

The remarks come amid a renewed national debate on youth inclusion, unemployment and the role of young Nigerians in governance and economic development.
