Nigeria senior national team coach Eric Chelle has poured cold water on reports of talks with Newcastle United striker William Osula to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com exclusively reports.
Danish outlet Tipsbladet reports that the striker, who was last selected for the Danish national team in March but did not make his debut, is in talks with Nigeria.
They said the 22-year-old was contacted by a member of Eric Chelle’s staff, at a time when Denmark were unable to play Denmark after they failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Although Osula has eight goals in 15 appearances for the Danish U21 team, he has never made his debut for the senior team, and Nigeria will reportedly take advantage of that.
“It’s not true in any way. Chelle saw the report like anyone else. Maybe the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is aware but Chelle doesn’t know anything about any move for Osula,” a source close to the coach revealed.
However, Udinese defender Kingsley Ehizibue, who was denied the chance to play for Nigeria in 2017 due to immigration issues with Dutch authorities, said so.
The source says the 30-year-old has resolved the issue and is hopeful of being able to take part in the Unity Cup or the high-profile friendly matches against Poland and Portugal respectively.
