Kwara United on Wednesday defeated Nasarawa United 2-1 in the midweek clash of the round five of the Euromatch NPFL at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl at the George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.
The Harmony Boys showed grit and resilience throughout the match, particularly in the first half, and were rewarded for their impressive start when Jerry Alex dispossessed an opponent and launched a pass to Sani Mohammed.
Mohammed, displaying composure and determination, fired home from close range after a solo effort to put Kwara United ahead in the 11th minute.
The hosts continued to dominate the game as they searched for a second goal, but Nasarawa United found a way back into the game after taking advantage of a loose ball that resulted in a corner kick.
Jofrank Istifanus reacted quicker inside the area, beating Kwara United goalkeeper Ouattara Khalifa to level the score and send both teams into the break at 1-1.
In the second half, coach Ashifat Sulyman introduced Adeshina Gata, Stephen Godwin and Abdulsalam Abdulsalam as he looked to increase his team’s pace and offensive threat.
The changes paid immediate dividends. Stephen Godwin received a pass from Gata and managed to shoot wide despite being in an awkward position. The Nasarawa United goalkeeper could only parry the shot, and Abdulsalam Abdulsalam was on hand to fire in the rebound and restore Kwara United’s lead.
The visitors pressed hard during the final minutes, creating several opportunities in search of an equalizer. However, Kwara United goalkeeper Stanley Victor and a resolute defensive line stood firm to repel the threats and ensure maximum points for the Harmony Boys.
Kwara United goalkeeper Ouattara Khalifa was substituted after suffering a shoulder injury.
Gidado Toyeeb was named Cyteck Player of the Match after an impressive individual performance.
In the post-match conference, Kwara United coach Ashifat Sulyman admitted that his team struggled with aerial passing and promised to work on the team’s deficiencies.
The coach also praised his players for getting the three points and added that the team will build on the momentum as the league progresses.
Kwara United will travel to Owerri on Sunday to take on Kun Khalifat in their next NPFL match.
