The U.S. mission in Nigeria warned Monday that Nigerians who overstay their visas are putting future travelers at risk, saying rule-breakers could close the door on students, businesspeople and families who follow the rules.
In a notice posted on its official X account, the mission said compliance with U.S. immigration law is not just personal, but communal. Some violations may reshape how every Nigerian claim is adjudicated.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travelers may impact opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the statement read. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travelers and families who travel responsibly.”
The mission noted that Nigerians routinely travel to the United States for school, business, tourism and family visits, and urged every traveler to abide by the terms of their visa from entry to exit.

He also flagged the increase in cases of visa fraud and document abuse, asking the public to help defend the integrity of the system. Anyone with credible information should report it through the embassy’s consular fraud prevention channels, he said.
Reaffirming its commitment to safe and legal travel between the two countries, the mission underlined one point: when a few people cheat the system, the compliant majority pays the price.
