NEMA received 181 Nigerians evacuated from Libya through an assisted return program

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has detained 181 Nigerian nationals repatriated from Tripoli, Libya, as part of the Assisted Voluntary Repatriation program coordinated by the International Organization for Migration in partnership with the Federal Government.

The development was revealed in a statement shared on Tuesday via NEMA’s official X platform.

According to the agency, the returnees were received by the Lagos Operations Office in collaboration with the National Commission for Migrant Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons.

According to the statement, “The National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos Operations Office, in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, has received 181 Nigerian returnees from Tripoli, Libya, under the Assisted Voluntary Repatriation program facilitated by the International Organization for Migration in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“The returnees arrived on April 27, 2026, at approximately 20.13 hours at the cargo terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, using an Air Buraq Airline flight with registration number 5A-BAB.

“The number of returnees includes 159 adults, consisting of 64 men and 95 women; 12 children, consisting of five men and seven women; and 10 babies, consisting of six men and four women.”

Upon arrival, Nigerian Immigration Services officers conduct biometric registration and documentation of returnees to ensure proper identification and facilitate reintegration.

According to the statement, “Upon arrival, Nigerian Immigration Services officials conducted biometric registration and documentation to ensure accurate record keeping and facilitate smooth reintegration.”

NEMA added that the refugees were immediately provided with essential humanitarian support in line with government policy.

The agency noted, “In line with the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure the safe, dignified and humane return of its citizens, returnees are provided with immediate humanitarian assistance, including food and drinking water; medical care; ambulance services; baggage handling; logistical support; and counseling and coordination services.”

He added, “The reception exercise was successfully conducted in an orderly manner through effective collaboration among relevant stakeholders, ensuring the provision of necessary support services to the returnees.”

This latest evacuation was a continuation of a similar exercise less than a month earlier, when NEMA, in collaboration with IOM, received 145 Nigerians evacuated from Benghazi, Libya, in March.

The evacuees arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport at around 20:27 on an Al Buraq Airlines flight under the same Assisted Voluntary Repatriation program.

According to the Head of the NEMA Operations Office in Lagos, Mohammed Olatunde, the previous group consisted of 122 adults – 46 men and 76 women – along with 29 children (13 boys and 16 girls) and 27 babies, including 17 boys and 10 girls.
