Kwara FA Congress approves vote of confidence in Thuraya and approves Local Football Council elections

The Kwara State Football Association (KWSFA) Congress passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the leadership of the association under its President, Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa Thuraya, and approved on August 25, 2026 elections to the 16 Local Football Councils across the state.

The resolutions were contained in a statement issued at the end of the KWSFA Congress held at the Football House, Ilorin, today, Saturday, July 18, 2026.

Congress commended the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, NOC, for his administration’s continued investment in sports infrastructure, particularly the upgrading and rehabilitation of facilities at the Rashidi Yekini Main-Bowl of the George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin.

According to Congress, the upgraded facilities have significantly improved Kwara State’s ability to host major football competitions and other sporting events, thereby contributing to the growth and development of football in the state.

The delegates also expressed their confidence in the current KWSFA Board of Directors, headed by Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa Thuraya, citing its proactive, transparent and progressive approach in football administration.

Congress commended the efforts of the Board in developing grassroots football, building partnerships, attracting sponsorships and initiatives aimed at raising the profile of football in Kwara State.

As part of preparations for the upcoming state football elections, Congress approved the Board’s proposal to hold elections for the 16 Local Football Councils on August 25, 2026.

Furthermore, it ordered all affiliated bodies and associations to conduct their respective elections in accordance with the provisions of the KWSFA Statutes and other relevant regulations before the elections to the State Board of the Football Association.

Congress also asked the Kwara State Sports Commission to introduce subsidized fees, concessions and exemptions for football clubs using sports facilities within the state. Delegates noted that such measures would reduce operating costs, strengthen club development and encourage broader participation in football activities.

In recognition of the private sector’s support to football development, Congress commended Engr. Femi Sanni Araba and the management of Stefolga Group and FlowFM for sponsoring the Kwara State Federation Cup.

Delegates described the three-year sponsorship deal as a historic intervention capable of driving the growth and sustainability of the state’s oldest football competition.

Furthermore, Congress called on the Kwara State Government to establish special intervention programs for football clubs representing the state in national and international competitions.

He also advocated for incentives, subsidies and other forms of support for privately owned football clubs, noting that similar initiatives have produced positive results in several states across the country.

Reaffirming its commitment to the advancement of football, Congress pledged continued support for programmes, partnerships and initiatives aimed at talent discovery, better football administration and positioning Kwara State as one of the major football hubs in Nigeria.
