Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has explained his decision to anoint Mustapha Gubio as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship elections.
Zulum made the clarification in Abuja when he submitted the expression of interest and nomination forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Gubio.
In a statement released on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, the governor said the move is aimed at sustaining the development gains recorded under his administration.
“I know how I became Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RRR) and how the office shaped a standard of governance that changed the lives of our citizens. Engr Gubio has demonstrated similar discipline, courage and uncommon commitment to public service,” Zulum said.
He noted that Gubio has shown exceptional skills in overseeing critical infrastructure projects, particularly in housing development in urban and rural communities, which have significantly improved living conditions in the state.
The governor added that beyond infrastructure, Gubio played a key role in the reconstruction of insurgency-affected communities, especially during his tenure as Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement.
According to the statement, Gubio led reconstruction efforts in conflict-affected areas such as Bama, Konduga, Damasak and Mafa local government areas, ensuring the restoration of schools, health facilities and other essential services.
Zulum said the results are in line with his administration’s vision of recovery, stability and sustainable development, describing Gubio as a natural choice to consolidate ongoing progress.
The governor stressed that the approval reflects a strategic decision anchored on continuity, experience and commitment to maintaining peace, resilience and transformative governance in Borno.
