The Labor Party opens the 2027 presidential election

The Labor Party has declared its presidential candidacy open to all eligible members ahead of the 2027 general election.

The party also expressed its confidence in the newly formed National Working Committee (NWC) led by former Minister of Finance, Esther Nenadi Usman.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, stated this on Thursday in Abuja after observing the inaugural meeting of the NWC.

Otti said the new leadership, emerging from the party’s recent national convention, had the support and capacity to change the party’s position.

He congratulated Usman and other committee members because their presence at the meeting reflected unity and commitment.

“I congratulate the National Chair and members of the National Working Committee who are deemed worthy of leading the party for the next four years. We are very confident in their leadership abilities,” said the Governor.

Otti added that the party remains focused on strengthening its internal processes, including primaries and voting procedures, ahead of the upcoming elections.

Regarding concerns about internal divisions, he said the results of the convention showed broad participation, with more than 25 state chairmen; including some from the previous leadership structure in attendance.

This, he said, indicates that the party is gradually overcoming its challenges and consolidating unity.

In the 2027 presidential election, Otti said his party would provide equality for all candidates.

“If you meet the party’s requirements and want to run, we will give you a ticket. Democracy does not stop anyone who wants to contest. It is the people who will decide who leads them,” he said.

He emphasized that no eligible member would be excluded.

On speculation regarding political alignments, Otti rejected claims of external influence and stated that all registered parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), would continue to operate within the democratic space.

“The claim that there are hidden parties has no substance. APC will exist in 2023 and is still a political party. Likewise with other parties,” concluded the Governor.
