2027: Hope for Mark-led ADC, as INEC includes the party in the latest list on the website

There seems to be renewed hope that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) can still take an active part in the upcoming 2027 general elections if they straighten things out before that date.

This comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) updated its website to recognize the National Working Committee (NWC) led by David Mark, following a recent court ruling.

The update, reflected at 10pm on Thursday, also listed Rauf Aregbesola as national secretary, Mani Ibrahim Ahmad as national treasurer, Akibu Dalhatu as national financial secretary, and Oserheimen Aigberaodion Osunbor as national legal advisor.

This comes hours after the Supreme Court overturned a Court of Appeal ruling ordering parties in the dispute over ADC leadership to maintain the status quo ante bellum.

In a unanimous decision, the top court ordered all parties to return to the Federal High Court to hear the substantive lawsuit.

Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, who delivered the judgment, held that the lower court was entitled to require the accused to show cause as to why the ex parte application was not granted.

The dispute began after an aggrieved member, Nafiu Bala Gombe, filed a lawsuit challenging Mark’s emergence as ADC national chairman and asked the court to stop his faction from acting as party leader.

Following an earlier Court of Appeal ruling, INEC has removed the Mark-led executive from its portal, saying it will not recognize any faction.

However, the latest developments suggest a change, as the commission has now registered the Mark-led ADC while the case continues in court.
