NSC discusses Team Nigeria athletes ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games


The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Honorable Bukola Olopade, has rallied Team Nigeria athletes to compete with courage, discipline and patriotism as they prepare to leave Aberdeen for Glasgow ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Speaking to athletes at the Aberdeen training camp after the conclusion of the final phase of preparations, Olopade said the team had been given every opportunity to succeed and urged them to repay the faith reposed in them with exceptional performances.

“I addressed our Team Nigeria athletes at their retreat in Aberdeen as they concluded the final phase of their preparations before their departure to Glasgow for the start of the Commonwealth Games in just six days,” Olopade said.

He underlined the Federal Government’s commitment to the development of sports, noting that athletes have benefited from unprecedented support under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has made an unprecedented investment in Team Nigeria by providing a world-class training environment to ensure our athletes are fully prepared to compete with the best,” he said.

Olopade reminded athletes that representing Nigeria is both a privilege and a duty, urging them to uphold the nation’s values ​​during the Games.

“I reminded the team that wearing the green and white jersey is both an honor and a responsibility. I urged every athlete to remain focused, disciplined, patriotic and scandal-free during the Games, giving their all for our great nation,” he said.

The NSC Director General also delivered an emotional message before the team’s departure, encouraging the athletes to embrace the challenge of competing on the international stage.

“As you step onto the world stage, compete with courage, make Nigeria proud and remember that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, looks forward to welcoming you home with medals and success stories,” Olopade added.

Team Nigeria will leave Aberdeen for Glasgow in the next few days, where they will begin their quest for medals at the Commonwealth Games following weeks of intense preparations in Scotland.
