Falconets take commanding lead into second leg after win in Malawi

Nigeria’s national under-20 women’s team moved closer to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after claiming a 2-0 victory over Malawi in the first leg of their final qualifying round on Saturday.

Playing at the Remo Stars Stadium, Nigeria dominated the match, but had to wait until the second half to assert their superiority. The breakthrough came through an own goal from a Malawi defender before Ifeanyi Kindness added a second to give the hosts a firm lead.

The Falconets controlled possession for long periods and limited Malawi’s attacking threat, combining structured defending with sustained pressure in the final third. Despite a goalless first half, Nigeria maintained their composure and capitalized on their opportunities after the break to take control of the tie.

The result puts Nigeria in a strong position ahead of the second leg scheduled for May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium, where Malawi will need a significant change to deny the Falconets a place in the World Cup.
