Niger governorship elections 2027: Bago chooses vice president


The governor, farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has retained his deputy governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, as his running mate for the 2027 governorship elections.

The governor disclosed this during a special meeting of the state government held at the Council Chamber, Government House Minna, on Tuesday, June 14, 2026.

He said: “this administration will try as much as possible to ensure that every aspect of society is represented in our government so that we have a reflection of state character in governance.”

He advised people to preach peace and desist from overheating the political system as the state is facing many challenges.

Responding to the agitations raised by some quarters, he assured that all agitations are general and fundamental, adding that people have the right to aspire.

According to him, “I remain ready to adhere to democratic principles and will allow people to speak on behalf of their clan, religion, tribe, area, senatorial district and constituencies to have equal representation in the system.”

The governor commended the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, and all members of the State House of Assembly for their support, describing it as a turning point in the State’s democratic dividends, adding that “there is no dissenting voice in the State Assembly and the State Executive Council in the choice of the Deputy Governor as the running mate in the 2027 governorship election.”

He also appreciated the state APC for its support and continued leadership in ensuring the triumph of the party.

Comrade Yakubu Garba was later presented with the nomination form during the event.
