One killed in suspected cult clash in Abeokuta, police launch manhunt

The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a suspected cult-related clash that claimed the life of an as yet unidentified man in Abeokuta on Sunday.

The incident, which occurred at around 2.45pm along Wasimi Ake Road between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank, towards Ijemo Agbadu axis, was said to involve rival cult groups.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command clarified that the violence did not take place at Ake Palace and was not linked to any political gathering, including the inauguration of the Yayi Progressive Movement held at the palace.

According to the police, initial investigations revealed that shots were fired during the clash, causing panic among residents as the alleged criminals fled into adjacent streets.

“Investigators from the Oke Itoku Division quickly responded to distress calls and were dispatched to the scene,” the statement read.

Babaseyi said officers found a victim, identified simply as “Stone,” with serious gunshot wounds at the scene.

He was immediately rushed to Ijaiye State Hospital, Abeokuta, in collaboration with the State Ambulance Service, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.

The body was deposited in the hospital morgue for autopsy examination.

The police spokesperson revealed that a manhunt has been launched for those responsible for the attack, with investigators following credible leads to ensure their arrest and trial.

He added that normality had been restored to the area, with an increased security presence to prevent further violence.

The command urged residents to remain calm but vigilant and to provide useful information that can assist the ongoing investigation.

Residents were also encouraged to report suspicious activity via the command’s emergency lines, including the Gateway Shield helpline, 0800 000 9111, and other listed contacts.
