Maersk said the Alliance Fairfax, a U.S.-flagged aircraft carrier operated by its subsidiary Farrell Lines, left the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday accompanied by U.S. military assets.
American forces are actively assisting efforts to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, US Central Command (Centcom) said on social media site X on Monday.
About 20% of the world’s oil passed through that vital maritime chokepoint before its virtual shutdown following the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran.
This was how Tehran tried to stop a new American attempt to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
βAs a first step, 2 US-flagged merchant vessels have successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz,β Centcom said Monday on X, adding that US Navy guided-missile destroyers are operating in the Gulf under a directive called βProject βFreedom.β
The β Alliance Fairfax is part of the U.S. Maritime Security Program, which provides financial stipends to dozens of private U.S.-flagged commercial vessels that provide transportation for the U.S. military during a war or national emergency.
Maersk said the transit of the Alliance Fairfax was completed without incident and that all crew were safe and unharmed.
Maersk bought Virginia-based Farrell Lines in 2007, the U.S. ride-hailing operator said.
The Alliance Fairfax was among hundreds of ships stranded in the Gulf due to the virtual closure of the β Strait of Hormuz in early March.
At least one other U.S.-flagged vessel remains in the Gulf area.
