The Liberals swept a trio of federal elections on Monday night, adding another member to the ranks of their majority government and taking a seat that has been held by the Conservatives since 2018.
The Tories posted disappointing performances in all three races, but none more so than in defeat at Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where the party was relegated to a distant third.
“It’s a great time to be a Liberal in Canada and in the Beaches-East York,” MP-elect Tanveer Shahnawaz told supporters east of Toronto Monday evening.
The Liberal Party’s strength comes amid an increasingly tense trade war with the United States.
Carney ended trade talks on Aug. 21, drawing attention to negotiations that appeared close to a deal to roll back sectoral tariffs that have caused uncertainty in Canada for more than 18 months.
Instead, both sides have promised tariffs and counter-tariffs. Senior members of US President Donald Trump’s administration traded criticism in the media with figures such as Ontario Premier Doug Ford and former Quebec Premier Jean Charest.
“At this crucial moment for Canada, voters put their trust in our government’s plan. We accept their support with humility and resolve,” Carney said in a statement Monday.
Tanveer Shahnawaz of the Liberal Party has won the Toronto by-election in the Beaches-East York.

Shahnawaz manages the constituency office of former Liberal cabinet minister Nate Erskine-Smith, whose departure from federal politics prompted the vote.
And The Canadian Press projects that longtime Liberal political staffer Braeden Caley will win the federal election in North-Vancouver Capilano.
Voters in Quebec’s Saguenay region, including Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, know all too well the impact of Trump’s tariffs. Aluminium, forestry, and dairy farming are important parts of the regional economy.
The Liberal Party chose Daniel Gobeil, a dairy farmer and former chairman of the provincial milk producers’ association, to carry their banner in the election.
Speaking to supporters in France on Monday evening, Gobeil said the government would look after those in the aluminum and forestry sectors, and be a strong voice for supply management.
Quebecers last voted for a Liberal in 2015. Richard Martel has won four times since the 2018 by-election. The former junior hockey coach won a very close race in the 2025 federal election.
On Monday, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet effectively declared the Tories irrelevant.
Blanchet told supporters of second-place candidate Caroline Dubé that although Canada has a two-party system with the Liberal and Conservative Parties, “there are two political parties in Quebec: the Liberal Party of Canada and the Bloc Québécois.”
Martel is the fifth Conservative to leave Pierre Poilievre’s caucus since the April 2025 election. Chris d’Entremont, Matt Jeneroux, Michael Ma and Marilyn Gladu all met between November 2025 and last April, effectively giving Carney’s Liberals the majority they were unable to obtain the previous year.
Martel, who was also expected to cross over to the Liberal Party, instead received a seat in the Senate.
Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University, said ahead of the general election that a Liberal victory in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord would be evidence of the Carney team’s “great strategy” to appoint Martel to the Senate and open the race in a tight race.
The New Democrats, whose disastrous 2025 election results saw it lose official party status in the House of Commons, gained ground in the Beaches-East York and finished in second place.
“We have proven that the last election was a one-off injury,” NDP Leader Avi Lewis said in a statement.
“Tonight, we tripled our vote share compared to the previous election, and achieved better results than in any election since 2015.”
However, the NDP is thousands of votes behind the Liberal Party.
The new representative from Toronto east, Shahnawaz, is constituency office manager Nate Erskine-Smith. Erskine-Smith left federal politics to run for leader of the provincial Liberal Party.
That plan was thwarted when he failed to secure the party’s nomination.
