Nigeria faces Kenya in crucial knockout clash as Olympic race heats up

The 2026 African Women’s Volleyball Championship in Nairobi, Kenya enters a decisive stage this weekend as the tournament moves into the knockout rounds, with Nigeria set to take on hosts and defending champions Kenya in a highly anticipated round of 16 clash.

The knockout matches are scheduled for August 29 and 30 at the Kasarani Arena, with seven teams fighting for places in the quarterfinals and a continued path towards the continental title and qualification ambitions for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Nigeria, who finished fourth in Group C with one win and two losses, will face a major test against an impressive Kenyan team who topped Group A without dropping a set.

The Nigeria-Kenya match is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Saturday, August 29 and the hosts are expected to enjoy strong local support.

Kenya, known as Malkia Strikers, were impeccable in the group stage, collecting six points from two victories and winning all six sets they played.

Nigeria, meanwhile, will need a significant improvement in their group stage campaign if they are to overcome the East African giants and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The round of 16 will begin earlier on Saturday when Uganda takes on the Democratic Republic of the Congo at 1:00 p.m., while Algeria takes on Senegal at 4:00 p.m.

Four more knockout matches will be played on Sunday.

Rwanda, who also enjoyed a perfect campaign in the group stage, will take on Burkina Faso at 10am, before Zambia take on Ghana at 1pm. Egypt will face Burundi at 4:00 p.m., while Tunisia and Mali will complete the round of 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Egypt and Rwanda enter the knockout phase with perfect records, each with three wins, nine points and nine sets won without losing any.

Egypt dominated Group B, defeating Burkina Faso, Senegal and Uganda, while Rwanda had a similar performance in Group D.

Cameroon were equally outstanding in Group C, winning all three matches and all nine sets to finish first with nine points.

Their impressive campaign earned them direct qualification to the quarter-finals, meaning the defending contenders can now watch the round of 16 battles before meeting their next opponent.

Cameroon scored 225 points and conceded 159 during the group stage, underscoring their dominance.

Rounding out the group winners were Kenya, Egypt, Cameroon and Rwanda, while Zambia, Uganda, Tunisia and Algeria also advanced from their respective groups.

Now that the competition enters the knockout phase, the margin for error has disappeared.

For Nigeria, Saturday’s match against Kenya represents a chance to turn around their modest group stage campaign and keep their championship hopes alive.

There is also much at stake beyond the continental title, with teams keen to strengthen their ambitions in the lead up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

With ten-time champion Kenya backed by the home crowd and Egypt, Cameroon and Rwanda with unbeaten records in the knockout rounds, Nairobi is set for a crucial weekend for African women’s volleyball.

Seven games, seven places in the quarterfinals and a great objective, to stay alive in the race for continental glory and the road to Los Angeles 2028.
