Players threaten to boycott French Open over prize money dispute

Players have threatened to boycott the French Open if concerns over prize money distribution are not addressed, with world number one Aryna Sabalenka warning that drastic measures may be necessary. Coco Gauff also backed the possibility of a boycott, intensifying tensions between Roland Garros players and organizers.

The dispute centers on how revenue is shared, even though organizers announced a 9.5 percent increase in total prize money to 61.7 million euros for this year’s tournament. Top players argue their share remains significantly below expectations, reportedly accounting for less than 15 per cent of total revenue, compared to the 22 per cent they are pushing in line with ATP and WTA 1000 level events.

Speaking to reporters at the Italian Open, Sabalenka made it clear that the players could escalate the situation if progress is not made. “I think at some point we will boycott it (the tournament), yes. I feel like that will be the only way to fight for our rights. Let’s see how far we can go, if it will be necessary for the players to boycott… Some of the things, I feel like they are really unfair to the players. I think at some point it will come to this.”

Despite the firm stance, Sabalenka expressed hope that ongoing discussions will lead to a resolution acceptable to all parties, adding that she hopes the negotiations will eventually produce a fair outcome.
