It took the Hurricanes less than two minutes to regain the lead.
Canucks defenseman Tom Willander lost track of Ehlers behind the Vancouver net and the winger took advantage, sneaking in from under the line, taking a pass from Blake and firing an uncontested shot into the gaping net to give Carolina a 2-1 lead.
With just two seconds remaining in the opening frame, Lekkerimaki fired a shot up and past Kochetkov to tie the score again heading into the locker room.
Less than three minutes into the second half, the visitors capitalized on a Canucks clearing attempt with Jesperi Kotkaniemi taking the puck off along the boards and passing it to Deslauriers. The veteran forward put a shot under the crossbar to put the Hurricanes up 3-2.
The tally marked the first time the journeyman striker had scored since April 2025.
Once again, the home team rallied.
Carolina’s Bradly Nadeau collided with Arshdeep Bains in the slot, sending the Vancouver forward crashing into Kochetkov. Sasson — who had come out of the penalty box moments before — took advantage of the moment by firing a shot to equalize the score at 3-3.
Deslauriers was the difference maker at 4:07 of the third quarter. Nadeau fed him a backhand pass from along the end boards and the 35-year-old forward knocked it off Merilainen to give the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead.
Ehlers added an unassisted goal at 10:21 of the third quarter, then fed Stankoven to give him an empty-net goal with just over two minutes left in the game.
Conclusion
Canucks: Entered the game with the worst penalty kill in the league (58.1 percent) but committed three second-half fouls and two minor fouls in the third.
Storm: There were tense moments for the battered team midway through the second half when Ehlers went down after making contact along the boards. He appeared to favor his right foot when he left the ice, but returned after speaking with trainers on the bench for several minutes.
Important moment
Kochetkov prevented Vancouver from gaining momentum – and the lead – late in the second half when he knocked Drew O’Connor’s shot out of the air.
