Amabongwa, the traditional South African Maskandi costume and expressive storytellers present a deeply rooted and culturally rich record called “Emkhuze”.

This touching release comes at the perfect time as indigenous music fans and Maskandi purists seek heartfelt, melody-driven Zulu folklore that combines acoustic brilliance with raw emotional conviction. Amabongwa continues to command respect across the regional landscape with a grounded narrative, a structured voice and a commitment to preserving Native traditions. On “Emkhuze” (a nod to Mkuze in northern KwaZulu-Natal), the band explores themes of home and rural roots, long journeys, belonging and facing life’s trials with introspective folk melodies.

The sound architects develop an organic, mid-tempo landscape based on complex acoustic guitar fingerpicking, accordion melodic lines and sharp percussive shakers. A smooth indigenous bassline slides beneath the traditional groove, keeping it engaging without overpowering the live instruments. Meanwhile, the sound engineering is so clean that there’s plenty of breathing room for every vocal nuance, native cadence, and layered background harmony to cleanly cut through the mix.
