Prominent opposition figures, including former Anambra state governor Peter Obi and his Kano counterpart, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have arrived in Abuja for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Convention, amid growing expectations over the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The convention, which brought together party leaders, delegates and supporters from across the country, is expected to ratify key decisions recently taken by the party’s National Executive Committee.
Issues under discussion include zoning agreements, the adoption of the party’s amended constitution and the election of a new national leadership that is expected to lead the party into the next election cycle.
The meeting comes at a time when the NDC is witnessing rapid political growth following a wave of defections from rival parties.
Just a few days ago, Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move widely seen as a major realignment within the opposition bloc.
Both leaders were received by party chiefs, including former Bayelsa State governor and NDC leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, during their official induction into the party.
The party has also strengthened its ranks in the National Assembly, following the defection of no fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives from the ADC to the NDC earlier this week.
Their move was formally announced during the plenary of the House of Representatives, adding momentum to the party’s expansionist drive.
Political observers believe the Abuja convention could shape the direction of opposition politics ahead of 2027, especially as debates over coalition building, zoning and possible presidential alliances intensify.
With Obi and Kwankwaso now on the same political platform, attention should focus on whether the convention produces a framework capable of uniting opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
