FCE Abeokuta makes history with international virtual teacher training programme

The Federal College of Education (FCE), Abeokuta, has recorded a major milestone in Nigeria’s teacher education sector by becoming the first College of Education in the country to host an international virtual certification training program facilitated directly by a globally recognized educator.

The pioneering initiative, organized through the Electronic Education Initiative (E-DON), featured Dr. Donna Stallings, former professor at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri, United States, who delivered the training virtually to students and faculty of the institution.

Education stakeholders have described the program as a significant step forward in the drive to internationalize teacher education and expand access to global best practices through digital technology.

According to organizers, the training allowed participants to access world-class teaching expertise in pedagogy, curriculum development and professional growth without the financial burdens and logistical challenges associated with study abroad programs.

They noted that the initiative demonstrated the growing potential of technology-driven learning to overcome geographical barriers and connect Nigerian institutions with international academic standards in real time.

A statement released by the organizers said the program is in line with the federal government’s commitment to digitalisation, innovation, human capital development and global partnerships in education.

The organizers also appreciated the contributions of key education agencies including the National Commission for Educational Institutions under the leadership of its Executive Secretary, Angela Ajala, the Sonny Echono-led Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the Committee of Deans of Nigerian Educational Institutions to support reforms to strengthen teacher education across the country.

Special praise was also given to the Rector of FCE Abeokuta, Rafiu Adekola Soyele, whose leadership was credited with driving innovation and positioning the institution at the forefront of educational transformation.

Organizers said virtual training brought multiple benefits, including increased access to international expertise, improved digital literacy among faculty and students, exposure to global teaching methodologies, and increased professional development opportunities for academic staff.

They added that the model could be replicated across all colleges of education in Nigeria to accelerate efforts to build a technology-driven and globally competitive education system.

Speaking on the importance of the programme, the Founder and National Program Coordinator of E-DON, Idonuagbe Akogun, described the initiative as a transformative development for tertiary education in Nigeria.

Akogun said the program represents “the dawn of a new era of innovation, collaboration and global engagement” and urged participants to see it as more than a training exercise, but as a strategic shift in preparing Nigerian teachers for the demands of the 21st century.

He argued that the success of the program highlights the importance of leveraging technology and international partnerships to improve the quality of education and equip future educators with globally relevant skills.
