OpenAI is reportedly considering legal action against Apple over the ChatGPT deal

OpenAI is reportedly considering legal action against Apple over what it considers a disappointing ChatGPT integration deal that failed to deliver the visibility and customer growth that the AI company hoped for. According to Bloomberg, tensions between the two tech giants have risen sharply behind the scenes.

The report claims OpenAI has hired an external law firm to evaluate its options, including the possibility of issuing a formal breach of contract notice to Apple. While a full-blown lawsuit may not be imminent, sources familiar with the matter say any legal action will likely be delayed until OpenAI’s legal battle with Elon Musk is resolved.

The partnership between the two companies was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024, where Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri and introduced AI tools as part of the Visual Intelligence feature on the iPhone. This collaboration is widely seen as a major breakthrough that could introduce ChatGPT to millions of Apple users around the world.

However, reports state that OpenAI is becoming increasingly frustrated with the way Apple is handling the launch. Executives at the AI company allegedly complained that the ChatGPT feature was buried in Apple’s ecosystem, difficult for users to find, and far from the central position they had hoped for on iPhones and other Apple devices.

This disappointing launch reportedly resulted in weaker-than-expected business results. OpenAI and industry analysts estimate this partnership could generate billions of dollars in subscriptions and significantly increase ChatGPT adoption. “They basically said, ‘OpenAI needs to take a leap of faith and trust us.’ It didn’t go well,” one OpenAI executive told Bloomberg.
