“I’m sorry, daddy” — Desmond Elliot apologizes…

Desmond Elliot has publicly apologized to Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Tinubu, for his role in the failed attempt to impeach Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

The Surulere 1 MP apologized on TVC’s “Let’s Talk” program on Friday, calling Gbajabiamila his political mentor and “dad”.

“I know the media will come out and say eh, Desmond begs again. Yes, because he’s my egbon, and I grew up learning everything I know in politics through him,” Elliot said.

“He could be angry about something or whatever it was. I am human, and to err is human, to forgive is divine. So, I am sorry, my daddy, if I have offended you in any way.”

The apology comes after Gbajabiamila said on Thursday he almost lost his job during last year’s Lagos Assembly speakership crisis.

In January 2025, Obasa was impeached by a majority of lawmakers over allegations of gross misconduct while abroad.

Vice President Mojisola Meranda stepped in as the first female president.

Obasa rejected the move upon his return and challenged it in court. After 49 days, Meranda resigned and Obasa was reinstated following Tinubu’s reported intervention.

The court later quashed the proceedings that had ousted him.

Elliot also denied masterminding the impeachment attempt, saying he was in South Africa for his sister-in-law’s wedding when it collapsed.

“I was actually more than shocked. During that time, my wife’s younger sister was having a wedding in South Africa. So, I was in South Africa when it happened,” he said.

He said he initially believed the move had the support of the presidency, but stressed he was not involved.

“Me? The mastermind? It was really shocking to me… I wasn’t the mastermind of this,” Elliot said, adding that he won’t speak ill of someone he served under for 11 years.
