Sallah: Saudi Arabia announces date of Eid al-Adha

Saudi Arabia is expected to mark the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH on Monday, May 18, 2026, subject to official confirmation of the moon sighting by the Kingdom’s Supreme Court and relevant lunar observation committees.

The Islamic calendar is based on the sighting of the crescent moon, meaning that the start of Dhul Hijjah can be confirmed slightly differently depending on verified visibility and the official declaration.

Eid al-Adha scheduled for May 27, 2026

Based on the structure of the lunar calendar, Eid al-Adha is expected to fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, which corresponds to the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah.

However, the final date remains subject to official confirmation by Saudi authorities and verification of the moon sighting.

Arafah Day expected on May 26, 2026

The Day of Arafah, considered the most significant day of the Hajj pilgrimage, should be observed on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

On this day, pilgrims performing the Hajj gather on Mount Arafat near Mecca for prayers and supplications, a central rite of the pilgrimage.

Hajj season and preparations

The Hajj pilgrimage is scheduled during the first half of Dhul Hijjah, with the main rites taking place from the 8th to the 13th of the month.

Prior to the pilgrimage period, Saudi authorities typically begin initial logistical and operational preparations, including crowd management planning, transportation arrangements, health services and security coordination to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims.

Religious Significance of Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who was ready to sacrifice his son in obedience to God before a ram was provided as a substitute.

The festival is characterized by congregational prayers, animal sacrifices, distribution of meat to the needy, acts of charity and family gatherings. The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are also considered among the holiest in the Islamic calendar.

Global compliance

Muslim countries may observe Eid al-Adha on the same date as Saudi Arabia or on slightly different days, depending on local moon-viewing practices and national religious authorities.

Nigeria awaits official announcement

In Nigeria, the official date of Eid al-Adha will be announced by the Sultan of Sokoto, who serves as President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, following consultations with moon sighting committees across the country.

The final determination will be made after confirmed lunar observation closer to the end of Dhul Hijjah.
