OpenAI sets up its first overseas AI lab in a $234 million deal in Singapore

OpenAI Inc. has announced plans to establish a new artificial intelligence laboratory in Singapore through a multi-year partnership with the Singapore government, marking an important milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy.

ChatGPT’s creators said the move is part of a wider effort to support Singapore’s ambition to become a leading global hub for AI innovation and development.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, OpenAI will invest more than S$300 million, about $234 million, into the project. The facility will be the company’s first applied AI laboratory outside the United States and is expected to focus on developing practical AI solutions for industries including healthcare, finance, education and public services.

The company also revealed plans to significantly expand its workforce in Singapore in the next few years. OpenAI said its Singapore-based technical team will grow to more than 200 employees as operations scale up. The company will first open an office in Singapore in 2024 as part of its efforts to strengthen its footprint in Asia.

OpenAI explains that the new lab will work with local institutions, businesses and government agencies to accelerate AI research and adoption. This partnership is expected to help Singapore develop advanced AI capabilities while supporting the responsible and safe implementation of new technologies.

This announcement highlights Asia’s growing importance in the global artificial intelligence race. Big tech companies are increasingly targeting the region for expansion as governments invest heavily in digital transformation, AI infrastructure and innovation-focused economic policies.
