Final day of EPL: Chelsea miss out on Europe, Spurs avoid relegation

Chelsea were shocked 2-1 by Sunderland on the final day of the season as defeat saw them miss out on European football for the following season.

The Blues are looking to secure a place in the Europa League and if they win against the hosts, they will finish seventh.

But Chelsea were left in 10th and failed to qualify for Europe in caretaker boss Calum McFarlane’s final game in charge.

Meanwhile Sunderland qualified for European competition for the first time in 53 years.

At the bottom of the table West Ham joined Burnley and Wolves in relegation despite a 3-0 win over Leeds United, as Tottenham Hotspur secured their Premier League status with a 1-0 win over Everton.

Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 2-1 to end the season on a high after confirming their place as English champions.

Second-placed Manchester City, whose boss Pep Guardiola was playing his final game with the club, lost 2-1 at home to Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool qualified for the Champions League despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford. Manchester United beat Brighton 3-0.

In other matches, Bournemouth and Newcastle United drew 1-1, while relegated Burnley also drew 1-1 with Wolves.
