The Imumolen-led Accord Party will hold elections for a new governor in Oyo

The internal crisis in the Accord Party has taken a new direction after the national leadership led by Prof. Chris Imumolen announced plans to hold a primary election for the new governor in Oyo State.

Imumolen, who insists he is the party’s genuine National Chairman, canceled parallel primaries previously conducted in the state by the Maxwell Mgbudem-led faction.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the National Secretary of the faction, Mr Muktar Abdallah, the leadership stated that neither Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat nor Mr Olakunle Busari, popularly known as “Gudugudu”, is the legitimate governorship candidate of the party.

Imumolen described the emergence of parallel candidates from the same factional process as a reflection of “institutional confusion, greed, money politics and weak leadership” within the Mgbudem-led group.

He said it was shameful that the faction failed to manage its internal processes, exposing the party to public ridicule through conflicting results from the same primary election.

According to him, this development further proves the truth of party members who have long questioned the legitimacy, discipline and credibility of their rival faction.

He also announced the formation of a disciplinary committee to investigate the conduct of Mgbudem and the faction’s National Secretary, Mrs. Adebukola Ajaja, for alleged actions that embarrass the party.

Imumolen assured stakeholders in Oyo State that the national leadership will soon hold a fresh, transparent and unified primary election to produce a legitimate gubernatorial candidate.
