Arne Slot became Liverpool’s second short-serving head coach in the Premier League era after the club announced the Dutchman will not return for the new season.
Liverpool released the explosive news on Saturday, in a statement praising their ex Gaffer for insisting the split was non-negotiable.
The statement posted on the club’s website read in part:
“He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed during that time spoke volumes about him as a person.
“As such, we can only wish Arne the best in the next stage of his coaching career, with the expectation that he continues to be successful. We do so knowing that his legacy at Liverpool is intact and will be even more significant in the years and decades to come.
“However, the conclusion we have reached is based on the belief that the best way to address the team’s trajectory is through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, nor the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talent. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name and knowing that he and his family will always be welcome at Anfield.”
In the final months of the 2025/26 season, Slot seemed to lose the locker room with its most charismatic player, Mohamed Salah, defying the coach’s decisions. Salah himself announced his departure from Liverpool.
Salah’s controversial IG post:
“It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me more proud than that.
“Falling to another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool get back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and get back to being a team that wins trophies. That’s the football I know how to play and that’s the identity that needs to be reclaimed and maintained forever.
“It can’t be negotiable and everyone who joins this club should adapt to that. Winning a few games here and there is not what Liverpool should do. Every team wins games.
“Liverpool will always be a club that means a lot to me and my family. I want to see it succeed for a long time after I have moved. As I have always said, qualifying for next season’s Champions League is the minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”

short stay
In the Premier League era, Slot was the second Liverpool manager to win the league title after Jurgen Klopp.
However, he also became the second-shortest manager following Roy Hodgson’s brief six months at Anfield.
The tenure of each permanent Liverpool manager in the EPL era (since 1992):
Roy Evans: 5 years (January 1994 – November 1998)
Gerard Houllier: 6 years (July 1998 – May 2004) *Co-director with Evans August-November 1998
Rafael Benitez: 6 years (June 2004 – June 2010)
Roy Hodgson: 6 months (July 2010 – January 2011)
Kenny Dalglish: 1 year, 4 months (January 2011 – May 2012)
Brendan Rodgers: 3 years, 4 months (June 2012 – October 2015)
Jurgen Klopp: 8 years, 8 months (October 2015 – May 2024)
Arne Slot: 1 year (June 2024 – May 2026)
Who will Liverpool hire next?
Although the club have given no hint as to what decision they will make to fill the vacancy, reports have strongly linked Liverpool with a move for Andoni Iraola.

Iraola, who helped AFC Bournemouth to first place in Europe, announced his decision to leave the club and has since been the subject of interest from a number of clubs; Liverpool is the last.

The 43-year-old Spanish manager is believed to be open to the idea of staying in England, although his representatives have been in talks with Bayer Leverkusen since the end of the Pl season.
Liverpool will rebuild
After winning the PL title in his first season, the only Liverpool manager to do so, Arne Slot was backed in the following transfer window with a net spend of £189 million (£446 million gross).

However, the first team also lost several key players, including Luiz Díaz, Darwin Núñez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and, tragically, Diogo Jota.
On the other hand, his new signings struggled to make a big impact and the constant internal scrutiny of his players put Arne Slot on a difficult path.
However, the club will look to bounce back stronger next season, where their stars are expected to take a step forward and make them title contenders once again.
