Sir Stanley Sunny Nganya elected president of STDC Owerri

Sir Stanley Sunny Nganya has emerged as the new president of Standard Tennis Club (STDC) Owerri after defeating Sir Ugochukwu Nwaogwugwu in the club’s presidential election held at the club’s headquarters in Owerri on Sunday.

Nganya secured 63 votes to overtake Nwaogwugwu, who garnered 27 votes in an election that attracted considerable interest from members of one of southeast Nigeria’s leading tennis clubs.

The operation, which was described by members as peaceful and transparent, also produced additional members of the club’s executive committee who will lead the club’s affairs for the next term.

Speaking shortly after his win was announced, Nganya thanked members for their trust in him and pledged to run an inclusive administration focused on strengthening the club, promoting tennis development and improving member wellbeing.

In a display of sportsmanship, Nwaogwugwu congratulated the new president and assured him of his support, stressing the need for unity and collective efforts to advance the interests of the club.

Other officials elected during the exercise include Emeka G. Eche as Financial Secretary, Ikenna Nwaneri as Club Captain, Oluchi Ozurumba as Vice Captain, Johnson Chimezie as Treasurer, Okechukwu Okpei as Assistant General Secretary, Uzoma Onuachu as General Secretary and Sir Victor Iwuanyanwu as Vice President.

The election was further highlighted by a show of unity when Nganya and Nwaogwugwu hugged each other after the results were declared and pledged to work together for the progress of the club.

Recognized as one of the premier tennis clubs east of the Niger River, STDC Owerri has remained a key factor in the growth of tennis in the region through its support of recreational and competitive tennis activities.

Members expressed optimism that the new executive committee will build on the club’s achievements and further enhance its status as a leading center for tennis development in Nigeria.
