International Friendly: Wales achieve late equalizer to hold off Ghana in Cardiff

Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another setback when the Black Stars drew 1-1 with Wales in an international friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, extending their winless streak to four matches.

The Black Stars looked set to give new coach Carlos Queiroz a winning start after substitute Caleb Yirenkyi broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Ghana took advantage of a rare opportunity, with Yirenkyi reacting quicker to convert a rebound and put the visitors ahead despite Wales dominating much of the match.

Wales had previously threatened through Daniel James, who hit both post and crossbar during an impressive first-half display. The hosts continued to push for an equalizer and were rewarded in injury time when Lewis Koumas headed in a Neco Williams cross in the 93rd minute to score his first senior international goal and rescue the tie for Craig Bellamy’s side.

The result leaves Ghana winless in their last four matches, having recorded three defeats and one draw. The four-time African champions will now turn their attention to the World Cup, where they will be tied with England, Croatia and Panama. Ghana will be hoping to improve on their disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign, which ended with a group stage exit.
