EFCC: Set the record straight on the death of citizen Asar Michael Sesugh – THISAGE

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said it deems it imperative to clarify some recent incidents at its zonal directorate in Makurdi, Benue State. The victim’s mother, Asar Michael Sesugh, said Commission officers shot and killed her breadwinner son under circumstantial circumstances, urging the relevant authorities to intervene and bring her justice.

Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, on Saturday said officers of the directorate arrested 26 suspected cyber fraudsters on April 28, 2026. They were profiled and remanded in custody for further investigation after obtaining a remand order at a magistrate’s court.

Shortly after their arrest, namely on May 4, 2026, three of the suspects requested permission to use the bathroom at the Directorate detention facility and were permitted to do so. They took advantage of the opportunity, broke the roof of the bathroom and escaped from prison. Several attempts were made to arrest them again, to no avail.

However, new information arrived on Thursday, May 21, 2026 that one of the escaped suspects, Asar Michael Sesugh, was hiding somewhere in Kansho axis of Makurdi. Operations made for the position. Upon spotting the team, Sesugh and his alleged cult members opened fire on them.

The Commission agents returned fire in self-defense. All the suspected cult members, including Sesugh, fled following the exchange of fire between them and the EFCC operatives. However, Sesugh was later spotted lying in the pool of his blood on the side of the road. He was promptly taken to Police Cottage Hospital at Makurdi Police Headquarters where he was pronounced dead.

The Commission reported the matter to the Benue State Police Headquarters, Makurdi, and the police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of his death and are making efforts to arrest other absconding members of the alleged cult. Preliminary reports of the police investigations were also released to the public.

“The Commission wishes to state clearly that the deceased suspect did not die in custody and was never free on bail,” he said, adding that

‘While the EFCC expresses its condolences to the family of the deceased suspect, it will not condone any further attacks on its operatives or breach of its internal security by the suspects. The Commission assures that it will continue to act in the best interests of the nation.”
