The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has recorded a successful start to its national Under-18 talent identification programme, with more than 500 aspiring basketball players participating in simultaneous tryouts held in Benin City, Lagos and Abuja.

The initiative, designed to identify and develop the next generation of Nigerian basketball talent, has attracted young athletes from across the country seeking an opportunity to represent Nigeria in future international competitions and potentially earn a place within the D’Tigers and D’Tigress pathway.

Speaking on the success of the programme, NBBF President, Eng. Ahmadu Musa Kida, described the turnout as a strong indication of the immense basketball potential that exists across Nigeria.

“This is a pivotal moment in the development of basketball in Nigeria. The overwhelming response to these tryouts demonstrates both the passion for the game and the abundance of talent that exists across our nation.”

“Our vision is to create opportunities for every talented young Nigerian to be seen, valued and developed regardless of where they come from. These young athletes represent the future of Nigerian basketball and it is our responsibility to provide them with a path to realize their dreams.”

“Grassroots development remains the foundation of sustainable success. By investing in talent identification today, we are building the future of D’Tigers and D’Tigress for years to come.”

Also speaking on the initiative, the Director General of National Teams, Musa Adamu, highlighted the importance of establishing a structured and transparent player identification process for the country’s national teams.

“The goal of these tryouts is simple: to identify the best young basketball talent across Nigeria and ensure they have access to opportunities within our national team development system.”

“We are building a comprehensive talent database that will strengthen our Under-18, Under-19, D’Tigers and D’Tigress programs. Our goal is to ensure that no talented player goes unnoticed due to geography or lack of exposure.”

“The quality of talent on display was encouraging. This process is about more than selecting players for immediate competitions; it is about building a long-term pipeline that will support Nigerian basketball at the highest level for years to come.”

The NBBF technical team will continue to evaluate participants from the various centers as part of a broader strategy to identify, monitor and develop elite young players capable of representing Nigeria on the continental and global stage.

The Federation remains committed to expanding grassroots development initiatives and creating more opportunities for young athletes nationwide as it continues its mission to strengthen the future of Nigerian basketball.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), therefore reaffirms its position as the governing body responsible for the development, promotion and administration of basketball in Nigeria.

Through grassroots programs, national competitions and international participation, the NBBF is committed to building a sustainable and globally competitive basketball ecosystem.
