Before Nite of a Thousand Laughs became the face of Nigerian comedy, there was a man called John Chukwu. He was born in 1947, came to Lagos with nothing and became the highest paid MC in Nigeria. He shared the stage with Bill Cosby in the United States. When Babangida needed someone to liven up Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration in 1985, he sent a special delegation to John Chukwu’s village in Enugu to bring him back to Lagos.
