Gunmen kill three security operatives during attack on NIPSS, Plateau

Gunmen have attacked the National Institute for Political and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, killing three security operatives in a fresh wave of violence against security outfits.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as a fatal assault which occurred in the early hours of the day.

Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo revealed in a statement that the victims were members of security personnel on duty at the institution at the time of the incident.

“On a very sad note, the command confirms that three security personnel lost their lives during the incident,” he said.

Although police did not reveal the identity of the deceased, several reports indicated that two soldiers and a police officer were among the victims.

Following the attack, Police Commissioner Bassey Ewah ordered the immediate deployment of reinforcements to the area, with intensified patrols to prevent further attacks.

Authorities said the situation has since been brought under control, with normal activities in and around the institute resuming.

“The situation is under control and normality has been restored. Residents are asked to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities,” the police added, underlining that investigations are underway to clarify the circumstances of the attack.

Meanwhile, NIPSS management described the incident as a “security breach,” but declined to provide detailed information, citing the ongoing investigation.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Osime Samuel, the institute said there was no immediate threat to participants, staff or facilities.

“The situation was promptly contained thanks to the rapid response of security personnel and relevant agencies. Normal activities continue as planned,” the statement said.

The institute warned against speculation, stressing that it could not verify claims circulating on social media about the attack.

“It would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope or outcome of the incident at this time,” the statement added.

NIPSS, based in Kuru near Jos, is Nigeria’s main policy think tank responsible for training high-level public officials, making the attack a significant security concern.

The latest incident highlights growing fears over persistent insecurity in some parts of the country, particularly attacks on security personnel and strategic institutions.
