The family of the late Mr Ibu receives financial aid from Nigerians

The family of late Nollywood comedian John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, have received £7.5 million in donations following a public appeal highlighting their financial difficulties, including unpaid rent, school fees and deteriorating living conditions.

The fundraising effort was made public on Friday by content creator King Mitchy, who revealed that generous Nigerians contributed the money just days after he shared a video showing the actor’s widow and children pleading for help.

He expressed gratitude to everyone who donated, saying the overwhelming support had given hope to the grieving family during a difficult time.

Donations to cover rent and tuition

According to King Mitchy, the funds will be used primarily to pay the children’s school fees and pay off the family’s rent.

He noted that some of the money would also cover the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fees of Mr Ibu’s eldest daughter, who was reportedly unable to register due to financial difficulties.

“First of all, I want to sincerely thank everyone who donated. Together, we managed to raise ₦7.5 million for the family. God bless each of you,” he said.

She explained that the surgery would help stabilize the family while long-term support is explored.

The widow advised to move

King Mitchy also revealed that he advised Mr Ibu’s widow to move to a cheaper apartment after discussing the family’s financial situation with her.

According to the content creator, moving to a more affordable residence would ease the burden of rent and help the family manage available resources more effectively.

She maintained that her only focus since learning of the family’s condition was to ensure the children received the support they deserved.

“I only met her two days ago after a neighbor contacted me for assistance. Before then I knew nothing about the family’s situation. My goal has always been to ensure that the children get the help they need,” she said.

The family’s plight arouses public sympathy

The donations came after a video circulated online showing the late actor’s widow recounting the challenges facing the family.

He revealed that they had been living without electricity for about two months because they could not pay their electricity bills.

The widow also said the family relied on water from a well, while the children had stopped attending school due to unpaid fees.

The emotional appeal drew widespread sympathy from Nigerians, many of whom praised the quick response of donors and called for continued support for the family.
