NEMA welcomes 123 Nigerians repatriated from Algeria

The National Emergency Management Agency has welcomed 123 Nigerian returnees repatriated from Algeria under the Assisted Voluntary Return Program coordinated by the International Organization for Migration in collaboration with the federal government.

The returnees arrived on Monday at the cargo terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, aboard a Nesma Airlines flight, NEMA said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the agency, the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safe, dignified and orderly return of distressed Nigerians stranded abroad.

NEMA said the reception was coordinated by its Lagos Operations Office in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Nigeria Immigration Service and other relevant government agencies.

It said the returnees included 121 adults, including 112 males and nine females, one female child and one male infant.

The agency added that Nigeria Immigration Service officials carried out biometric registration and documentation of returnees to facilitate proper record keeping and support their reinstatement.

It said the returnees were provided with humanitarian assistance, including food, drinking water, medical screening, ambulance services, baggage handling, logistical support, reception services and counselling.

NEMA noted that the intervention reflects the federal government’s commitment to the welfare and reintegration of returning citizens.

The agency added that it will continue to work with relevant partners to coordinate humanitarian interventions and ensure the safe and dignified return of vulnerable Nigerians.

The latest batch comes almost a year after NEMA received 104 Nigerian returnees from Algeria under the same assisted voluntary return programme.
