Nigerian international defender Benjamin Fredrick has signed a new contract with English Premier League side Brentford, OwngoalNigeria.com reports.
He was loaned last season to Belgian club FC Dender, after being voted the club’s best under-23 young player. His loan was cut short due to an injury.
Returning to Brentford, he was linked with the first team for pre-season and the club confirmed his promotion to the team on a permanent basis in addition to his new contract, which will run until 2030.
Head coach Andrews said: “We are delighted that Benji has signed a new contract and is going to be part of the group this season, because we see a lot of potential in him and where we can take his game.
“He has already played senior international football and was an important part of the Nigeria team in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
“Last season he had a really productive loan spell in Belgium that was unfortunately cut short by injury.
“Benji’s first goal is to integrate consistently into the team. His last game was in mid-November, so he has been out for a long time due to injury.
“Then he has to get into the first-team space, challenge his teammates and show the ability and personality that I know he has.”
For his part, Fredrick, who will now have a new team number, said he is looking forward to the challenge of next season.
“It’s a great feeling. I’m happy and proud of myself, and my family is proud of me too,” said the 21-year-old Nigerian international.
“The club has helped me a lot. When I arrived here I was a little nervous and shy. I didn’t know how to do the basics because where I’m from is a little different from here.
Fredrick continued: “I just want to keep pushing myself and learning every day.
“My goal is to make my debut with the first team, get minutes in the Premier League and give my best when I have the opportunity.”
