UNICEF urges sustained investment for Nigerian children

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell has called for sustained investment in Nigerian children, describing them as the country’s greatest opportunity for future growth, innovation and resilience.
Russell made this appeal at the end of his official mission to Nigeria on Friday, saying the country’s nearly 105 million children and adolescents, representing about half its population, remain its most precious resource despite growing economic challenges.

It noted that despite rising inflation, global financing constraints, insecurity, displacement and climate-related shocks continue to impact vulnerable families.

He added that Nigeria has made notable progress in birth registration, social protection and school enrollment through government-led interventions.

“Everywhere I went in Nigeria, I saw the strength, ambition and potential of children and young people, despite constant challenges.

“There is no denying that many children face challenges, but I am encouraged to see the Government-led response in providing essential services to children,” she said.

During his visit, the UNICEF chief visited Sokoto state, where he met with mothers at a UNICEF-supported health center that treats children suffering from malnutrition and interacted with boys and girls benefiting from digital learning programs designed to give them a second chance at education.

He stressed that investments in health, nutrition, education, clean water and child protection remain crucial, warning that recent progress could be reversed without sustained funding and stronger partnerships.
She believes the early years of a child’s life are crucial to long-term development, stressing that access to good nutrition, quality healthcare, early learning and protection provides the foundation for stronger communities and a more prosperous economy.
Russell commended the commitment of federal and state governments to improving the well-being of children and reaffirmed UNICEF’s readiness to continue working with government, development partners and the private sector to expand opportunities for every Nigerian child.
“Nigeria’s future will be shaped by the choices made for children today,” he said, adding that the country has the potential to become a model for investment in child-centered services and inclusive economic growth.
